All Hands on Deck!
Now is the Time to Speak Out on Government-Run Health Care
If you listen to many of the supporters of the health care reform proposal being supported by the President, you may never realize that more than 70% of the German, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand, and British adults living with “free health care” say that their government-run single-payer system needs either “fundamental change” or “complete rebuilding.” In contrast, nearly 70% of Americans say that they are satisfied with their health care. (This data comes from a new research paper from the Hoover Institute called “Here’s A Second Opinion.”)
This does not mean that the US system is perfect or not in need of improvement. Things can be done to improve our system and help those who are uninsured. However, there is a serious problem when the solution moving through Congress mimics government-run systems where few consumers are satisfied. For example, only 41.5 percent of Canadians say that they are satisfied with their health care system.
Perhaps the weak support among those in a government-run system with “free” health care stems from the poor quality of care so many receive. In such plans patients often wind up waiting for months for care that most Americans now take for granted. Nearly one million Canadians are currently waiting for some type of procedure or admission to a hospital. Nearly two-million people in Britain are waiting for care. In both countries, patients wait twice as often and twice as long as Americans.
Perhaps that is why polls are showing that majorities of Americans are worried about an apparent move toward a government take over of the health care industry by the President and Democrat led Congress.
For pro-family Americans there is even more over which to worry. Reports about “end of life” counseling in the congressional bill and rationing of care have raised questions about euthanasia and value of life judgments surrounding care for the elderly. Abortion activists like NARAL and Planned Parenthood have also made it clear that they want abortion coverage in any bill the President signs.
Congress has mercifully taken an August recess without pushing the 1,100 page health care bill through at the high speed desired by supporters. With legislators home, contacting your US Representative and Senators Bayh and Lugar with any concerns you have about this issue, has never been more timely.
Defending Marriage - Again
Recent Attacks On Marriage Put Indiana in the Crosshair
In January, two men who were “married” in Massachusetts three years earlier attempted to file for a divorce in Texas. State law in the lone star state, much like those in 44 others, recognizes marriages only if they meet the guidelines: no siblings; couples must be at least of a certain age; and between a male and female. In this case, the men were seeking a divorce for a marriage the state didn’t recognize. (Studies have shown that even after a country embraces homosexuality, such relationships do not stabilize. For example, in Sweden divorce rates are still between 50% and 170% higher than their heterosexual counterparts. Domestic violence is also much higher among homosexual couples than for married heterosexuals.)
Remarkably, State District Judge Tena Callahan used this opportunity to strike down not only Texas law, but their constitutional amendment defining marriage which was approved by 75% of Texas voters. Legal scholars have pointed out that this slap in the face to voters misses the point set by our founders. The constitution is a document of the people giving them final say over the judiciary. The ruling is being appealed by the Texas Attorney General and Governor.
Why is this Texas case of concern to AFA-IN readers? In late September two lesbians who were married in Canada attempted to file for divorce in Indianapolis. The Marion Superior Court ruled that they did not have standing for such a request since Indiana law does not recognize their marriage. Tara Ranzy and Larissa Chism, who seem not to be able to live together, have been able to work together toward their political goals just fine. Two days after the court ruling, they announced that they are appealing the court’s ruling to the Indiana Court of Appeals.
This is not the only underhanded attack on marriage Hoosiers have recently seen. In Northern Indiana, the Elkhart Truth newspaper has decided to subtly endorse same-sex marriage, but not through the proper avenue of their editorial page. They are printing same-sex wedding announcements for homosexual couples, (complete with photos) all of whom thus far, live out of state but claim family in Elkhart County. No other Indiana newspaper, except for one item in the Columbus Republic has gone this far. The Truth claims they do not have an agenda, that they are merely the “messenger.” Yet, they, far more than most, know the power they hold with the information they choose to print.
Recently, AFA-IN learned that radical socialist George Soros (via the Tides Foundation) and homosexual Colorado political activist Tim Gill have been funding Indiana’s largest gay demands group. Why? Is Indiana part of their agenda to remake America in their image?
There certainly seems to be a series of strings that have been pulled and events that have occurred that when viewed together, reveal that marriage in Indiana is still being systematically targeted by the enemies of the family. Your standing ready with AFA-IN to defend marriage, again, is more important than ever.
Obama: The Pro-Life President ?
There is a new poll out from the Gallup organization that is getting a lot of attention because it shows for the first time in 15 years a majority of Americans (51%) now self-identify as pro-life. Those saying that they are “pro-choice” on abortion are at a low point with only 42% labeling their views this way.
Gallup editor, Lydia Saad, believes that President Barack Obama’s strident pro-abortion position is the cause of the pro-life shift. “With the first pro-choice president in eight years already making changes to the nation’s policies on funding abortion overseas, expressing his support for the Freedom of Choice Act, and moving toward rescinding federal job protections for medical workers who refuse to participate in abortion procedures, Americans -- and, in particular, Republicans -- seem to be taking a step back from the pro-choice position,” she writes. “While Democrats may support that, as they generally support everything Obama is doing as president, it may be driving others in the opposite direction,” she adds. In other words, after over two-dozen steps against life since his election, the President has inadvertently helped America become pro-life.
Profiles In Courage!
Jackson County, IN Protesters Make an Unprecedented Stand
In this day of moral relativism, when making a judgment about someone’s behavior is taboo, this is a story that is hard to believe.
Perhaps the good people of Jackson County, in the small town of Uniontown, simply didn’t know any better. When a porn chain store opened along Interstate 65 in Southeast Indiana four years ago, no one must have told a group of concerned citizens that they would embark upon a journey no other group in the Midwest has traveled.
These patriots cared about preserving their Hoosier values and they were not about to allow smut peddlers to harm marriages and families with the distribution of pornography in this rural community. So they decided to have a protest.
When a strip club, porn store, abortion clinic or a casino opens, there are often protests from local residents. Those citizens may also take the step of writing letters to the editor, complain at a local government hearing or contact a legislator. The media will often cover the controversy with a story or two. Once in while, their concern will be acted upon by a state legislator, a city councilor or other elected official. But then the issue seems to fade away.
If this were the typical controversy, the story of the Uniontown Protestors verses the Lion’s Den would have already come and gone. In fact, nearly four years after it opened, the Lion’s Den is still open. But this is a story of courage and duty like no other. It’s also a story of victory.
As you may have guessed, the Uniontown protestors did protest outside the porn store. In fact, they have protested for nearly four years. That alone is notable these days. To have a group of about fifty people protesting a store every weekend for four years in sun, rain or snow is impressive. But these thirty-to-fifty residents didn’t protest every weekend. They have protested outside the Lion’s Den every hour of every day, 24-hours a day for 1,403 days in a row, as of June 15th!
