Know No Religion Yesterday's newspaper headlines on the front of the Indianapolis Star and its owner, USA TODAY, proclaimed what sounded like a startling finding concerning religion. Nearly half of all Americans are losing or abandoning the religion in which they were raised or had earlier adopted. Subtitles said that significant numbers are abandoning religion altogether. Such a reality would certainly explain the moral free-fall and cultural sludge in which our society seems so engaged. However, when the details were revealed for those who looked more into the study, the news was not nearly so disheartening. When the 44% of Americans who were apparently walking away from their faith traditions was examined, a huge number included in the study were people who for example, were raised Methodist but became Wesleyan. Only 28% of those who had made a faith change, had actually made what most would call a significant change such as going from Catholic to Muslim. Only 16% of the 35,000 people surveyed were not affiliated with any faith and only 4% considered themselves to be atheist or agnostic. What may be more disturbing than people who change or drift from one denomination or faith to another is the religious ignorance of most Americans. A couple of weeks ago, USA TODAY ran another story concerning a new book by Stephen Prothero, Chairman of the religion department at Boston University. In Religious Literacy: What Every American Needs to Know . . . and Doesn't Pethero reports that most Americans cannot name one book of the New Testament Gospels. Less than half can identify Genesis as the first book of the Bible. Sixty percent cannot name five of the Ten Commandments and half of all high school seniors surveyed thought that Sodom and Gomorrah were two Biblical figures who were married. Most self-described evangelicals did not recognize the phrase, "Blessed are the poor in spirit" from Christ's Sermon on the Mount. Pethro points out that many Americans have embraced a crafted idea of religion rather than actual religion itself. Religious ignorance and weak faith may be the real warning signal to those observing our societal change. Remarkable Admission Ignored by Media I should have learned a few years ago. It was then that I was first shocked by the lack of media attention given to surprisingly honest statements from the president of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. While on the PBS News Hour, Matt Foreman admitted that the state constitutional amendments passed in twenty-seven states to protect their statutory definition of marriage would have "no affect" upon "private employers" concerning "benefits given to homosexual employees." Opponents of marriage protection at the state level have been proclaiming something quite different as a scare tactic hoping to block efforts to pass amendments defining marriage as only between one man and one woman. I guess it's no surprise that two weeks after another remarkable statement from the NGLTF President that there has again been virtually no reaction from the media. At a speech before something called the National Conference on Lesbian-Gay-Bisexual-Transgender Equality, Matt Foreman said this: "Folks, with 70 percent of the people in this country living with HIV being gay or bi-sexual we cannot deny that HIV is a gay disease. We have to own that and face up to that." (link) In other words, one of the nation's leaders in the special-rights-for-homosexuals movement publicly admits that the homosexual lifestyle is an inherently unhealthy lifestyle, which exposes its practitioners to terrible medical risks, and his admission is largely ignored. Planned Parenthood Recommendation is Thin Veil for Self Serving Purposes One of the ways that Planned Parenthood and other contraceptive-based sex education groups have tried to attack abstinence education programs is to claim that such programs are not medically accurate. Of course, accuracy is a one-way street with Planned Parenthood. Whenever possible, they should be exposed for their amoral agenda for America's teens and their double standard on accuracy. For example, Teenwire.com a Planned Parenthood website for youth that claims to provide medically accurate information is coming under fire for recommending the use of pornography as a normal and safe activity. Although Teenwire does make the point that pornography is illegal in the United States for children under the age of 18, it nonetheless paints the picture of Internet porn as nothing more than harmless fun. Planned Parenthood, the nation's largest abortion provider and a major distributor of contraceptives, has a vested financial interest in waving a red flag in front of a bull when it comes to encouraging teens to be sexually aroused and active. So, as a matter of business, pornography and our sex-saturated society are great allies of Planned Parenthood. However, school administrators need to take note of the reckless recommendations of Planned Parenthood before they invite the organization or their materials into their buildings for health or sex education. A Symptom of Our Sex-Saturated Society One of the reasons the above story is important is because of the growing problem surrounding the issue of sex-addiction. One of the results of our sex-saturated society is the ease at which people can access and then become addicted to pornography. The Counseling Center at the Crossing, (http://www.indyhope.com)a Christian-based professional counseling agency in Indianapolis is starting a group for wives of sex addicts.
